Balboa Park

After leaving the San Diego Zoo, we drove next door to Balboa Park.  We didn’t really know what it was, so we just got out of the car and started walking around.  We first walked across the bridge and strolled through the rose and cactus garden.  Some of the most beautiful roses and unusual looking cacti I have ever seen.

We walked back through the gardens and just started wondering around.  About that time we started hearing some music, so we followed the sounds and ended up in a huge outdoor theater where they just happened to be having a free concert.  There were tons of people listening to a group playing and singing sixties music.  So we sat down to enjoy listening to the music and watching the couples dancing in the front.

We spent most of our time watching a little elderly gentleman dance.  He looked like he was about 90-years-old.  He would dance to a song with one lady, and then would pick another lady for the next song.  One minute he was dancing with a 20-year-old, and the next minute he was dancing with a 50-year-old.  Talk about being a “ladies man.”  As soon as one song ended, he would be scanning the crowd for his next partner.  Scott got a big kick out of that.

At one point, the band started playing the hand jive song from “Grease.”  The park broke out into the hand jive.  It was hilarious!

Then we just had to end our first day in California at the famous In-N-Out Burger for double-double cheeseburgers, skinny french fries, and chocolate shakes.  Glad we did all that walking today!
