San Diego Zoo

Our first morning in San Diego (June 23), we took off to the San Diego Zoo.  The zoo of all zoos!  The weather could not have been more perfect.  The temperature was in the high sixties/low seventies, and the sun would peek out from behind the clouds ever so often to warm you up just enough before hiding again.  The first thing we did was to hop on a double-decker bus for a 45-minute tour of the zoo.  Of course, we rode on the top!  We thought that might give us an idea of where to walk on foot after the bus tour, but it didn’t.  We were just as lost when we got off.  None of us could read the map very well.  It’s just such a huge zoo.

We had a blast walking around looking at all the animals… a lot that I have never even heard of before.  Our favorites… Emilee liked the giraffes and zebras best, Ashlee liked the monkeys and gorillas, Scott liked the Okapi (looks like a horse but has a zebra-striped butt), and I liked watching the monkeys chase each other as well as watching the orangutans come right up to the glass.  Here are some of our favorite pictures.

Who does this remind you of?

Once again, I couldn't resist!

He looked so pitiful behind that glass.

This one wanted some attention too, so he did the splits.

Peacocks just roamed freely around the zoo - this one was in a tree.

Is this considered standing on your tippy-toes?

We also got to watch some gorillas at feeding time.  The handlers were throwing fruit off of the roof above where we were standing.  It looked like one of the gorillas was covering her head.  We got it on video, but I'm not good enough with this blog yet to download it for you.  I'll have to work on that.

Right before leaving the zoo, Emilee used the rest of her souvenir money on a caricature of herself.  She posed for about 15 minutes while the artist drew her sitting on top of a polar bear.
